Depleting green cover, diminishing water resources and frequent change in climatic conditions are worrying the environmentalists in Himachal Pradesh. So, the government has set a target of planting over 1 crore saplings on 15,000 hectares of forest land by spending Rs. 150 crore to increase the depleting green cover in the state.
The schools and 3,000 youth clubs would also be participating in plantation drive across the state on the eve of International Youth Day on August 12.
The maintenance period in plantation areas has been enhanced from three to five years to ensure survival percentage of plants and RCC fencing is being encouraged for preventing deforestation.
A memorandum of understanding was signed for grant of two million euro under this project and the amount would be utilized for training programme of forest officials and development of local communities.
Under the project, Rs 2.40 crore has already been spent, while Rs 40 crore is being spent under afforestation programmes.
